About Cairns Cable Ski - The History of Cable Ski

  Cairns Cable Ski - History

Bruno Rixen is acknowledged as developing the idea of cable skiing. Mr Rixen (a german national) had the idea of using winter ski lifts for water skiing.

Since the first cable ski system appeared in 1962, on a German lake called 'Sci Nautico', cable skiing has spread over the world!

The first recognised cable ski championship was organised and eventually held in Germany in 1985.The sport developed legitimacy over the following few decades and in 1994 the World Cable Ski council was formed.

There are now roughly 140 cable ski parks over the globe.

The ease of use, efficiency, environmental friendliness and inexpensive accessibility for the masses is paving the way for the cable ski revolution. Now you can experience the addictiveness of cable skiing in the tropical surrounds of Cairns, Australia. Cairns newest attraction, Cable Ski Cairns, opened its doors for business for the first time on Saturday, 30th April 2005.

Three years in the making, Cable Ski Cairns Owner and Director/Manager Clayton Dunn stands proud and says it has been his dream for a long time to build and operate a Cable Ski Park of international standard here in Far North Queensland. Already the water ski park has attracted the interest of some of Australia's most experienced and successful cable skiers, as well as recently holding the Australian Cable Wakeboard Pro Tour.

Cable Ski Tricks

One of the young guns, Sam Collins from the Gold Coast, has based himself here in Cairns, to train for the upcoming world titles, he is currently 1st in the Australian Cable Wakeboard circuit. He is a staff member at Cable Ski Cairns and is helping to establish a strong local wakeboard community. In fact all of our staff members are professionals in their chosen sport.

Wakeboarding is currently one of the fastest growing extreme sports. Clayton Dunn, a former professional skier at Sea World and member of the successful Australian Cable Ski Team at the 1998 World Championships in Germany, says cable skiing is accessible to any age group (weight limits apply) and experience is not necessary. All staff are trained and experienced skiers themselves, and can teach patrons of the park how to water ski.

We all look forward to seeing you there!

Come and learn waterskiing, wakeboarding or kneeboarding!
